Howard Paul Shirley

Howard "Paul" Shirley, Jr. Howard "Paul" Shirley, Jr. 94, of Terre Haute died Monday, January 19, 2015 in Union Hospital. He was Vice President at H.P. Shirley and Company being employed there from 1940 until its closing in 1972, and Vice President of Shirley Supply Company until retiring in 1985. Paul participated on the basketball team and in dramatic plays at Otter Creek High School where he graduated in 1940. He served in the Army Air Corps for almost 4 years as a medic in WWII stationed in the South Pacific. He was a life member of the VFW Post #972 and American Legion Krietenstein Post #104. Paul was born on January 21, 1920 in Borton, Illinois to H.P. Shirley, Sr. and Ruth Sims Shirley. He is survived by two daughters, Martha Shirley and Janet Shirley, both of Indianapolis; one son and daughter-in-law, David Shirley and Mary Shirley of Westerville, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Marie Jenkins Shirley; both parents of Terre Haute; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Shirley Patrick and Cecil Patrick of Oregon, IL; one brother and sister-in-law, James Keith Shirley and Helen Maxine Whitehead Shirley of Terre Haute; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Woodrow Jenkins and Sara Rainbolt Jenkins of Clemson, Virginia. Paul was 50 plus year member of First United Methodist Church of Terre Haute and a current member of Centenary United Methodist church. He was a 60 year member of the TPA and UCT. He was very active in his church and enjoyed the fellowship of the Friendship Class at Centenary UMC as well as meeting with a small group of men from the church for lunch and great conversations which he cherished. He loved to travel with his family and friends to create everlasting memories. For the past eight months, Paul resided at Sycamore Manor here in Terre Haute where he formed a special friendship with residents and staff. He enjoyed many "reminiscence sessions" recalling his lifetime in Terre Haute. Funeral services will be conducted on 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 24, 2015 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street with Pastor Jimmy Moore officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled 6:00-8:00 P.M. Friday, January 23, 2015 in the Funeral Home and one hour prior to services.
