Herman Henry Rassel, Jr., 84, of Terre Haute passed away Wednesday morning, November 25, 2015 in his residence. He was the retired owner of Herm Rassel Mens Ladies Fashions in Downtown Terre Haute for many years. Herm was born December 1, 1930, in Terre Haute to Herman Henry Rassel, Sr. and Cecil Benefield Rassel. Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years Mary Catherine Meadows Rassel; five children, Connie Marrs and her husband, Terry, of Terre Haute, Paula Egan and her husband, Scott, of Terre Haute, Dan Rassel and his wife, Chris, of Russiaville, IN, Dave Rassel and his wife, Susan, of Valparaiso, IN and Herman H. Hank Rassel, III and his wife, Christie, of Greenwood, IN and 14 grandchildren, Jordan Marrs, Brian Marrs, Ashlyn Marrs, Kari Egan, Natalie Egan, Nathan Egan, Collin Rassel, Audrey Rassel, Logan Rassel, Leslee Rassel, Ryan Rassel, Nicholas Rassel, Olivia Rassel and Madeleine Rassel. Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Margaret Anne Weust and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 4 sisters, Dorothy Cahill, Helen Kelly, Marjorie Prothero, and Mary Ann Shagley. Herm was a 1948 graduate of Wiley High School and a 1952 graduate of Xavier University. A multi-sport athlete at Wiley, he earned numerous letters in several sports but at Xavier Herm concentrated on baseball and was captain of their baseball team his senior year. Herm also served in the United States Army during the Korean War where he attained the rank of Sergeant. He was a life-long member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was a life-member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #86. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Terre Haute where he was club secretary for 42 years and was honored with the Hixson Award in June of 2000, was past president of the Babe Ruth Baseball League and was a member of the Terre Haute Downtown Merchants Association, Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, AERO Club, Rose Hulman Board of Associates, Sycamore Country Club and JOLMAC. Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 30, 2015 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1807 Poplar Street, with Father Rick Ginther officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday from 3:00-6:00 P.M. with a Rosary to be recited at 6:00 P.M. in Callahan Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
