Helen Pauline Barnes, 91, a life-long resident of Terre Haute, passed away June 28, 2016 in Indianapolis. She was born June 2, 1925, in Terre Haute, IN to Louis and Mary Atelski and was always proud of her Polish heritage and her upbringing in St. Ann Church. After graduating from Central Catholic High School, she worked at the telephone company. In 1948, she was voted Miss Personality in Terre Haute, a title that she proudly remembered her entire life.
She married James A. Barnes Nov. 20, 1948, and they enjoyed raising their four children, living in and hosting parties and family gatherings in their cherished home on College Avenue, having an active social life with friends through her husbands job, the Elks Club, and the Sycamore Club, and being members of St. Patrick Church and, later, St. Benedict Church. Helen served as chief deputy clerk for the city of Terre Haute and later as a county court clerk. She was an outstanding cook and loved collecting and trying new recipes. She enjoyed attending the Terre Haute Symphony, working in the St. Benedict Church soup kitchen, reading, doing crossword and word search puzzles, feeding the birds, and leaving out food for the occasional stray cat. She liked animals and in her later years adopted a cat, Sydney, a welcome companion.
Helen is survived by children, Tina Sims (husband Terry) of Indianapolis, Lisa Guess (husband Greg) of Lindenhurst, Ill., and Jim Barnes (wife Paula) of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Erin Balderson of Indianapolis, James Guess of Chicago, and Christina Guess of Orlando, Fla.; brothers John Atelski of Brownsburg, Ind., and Andy Atelski of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews.
