Helen Armstrong Aitken, 100, native Terre Haute resident, died Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at her home in Westminster Village.
She was born on January 12, 1921, to Tressa and Wesley Allen Armstrong in Terre Haute. Helen was preceded in death by her brother Howard G. Armstrong and her parents.
Widow of the late Dr. William Aitken Jr., to whom she was married for 75 years, Helen was the loving mother of Judith Aitken Fell of Tampa, FL, Will Aitken of Montreal, Canada, and Janet Aitken of Wellington, CO.
In addition to her children, she is survived by two grandchildren, Lara Brennan (married to Matt) and Barrett (partner to Kimberly Tobias), and by three great-grandchildren, Addison Fell, Alexandra Hendrix and Grayson Hendrix of Tampa, FL.
Helen was a graduate of Garfield High School, where she won the DAR Award and was a member of the National Honor Society.
At Indiana State Teachers College (now ISU), she was a triple major in English, Latin and history. She was a founding member of the Omicron Chapter of Delta Gamma Fraternity. Helen won the Pamarista Women’s Honorary Organization’s Outstanding Student Award.
Prior to her marriage, she taught high school in Cory, Indiana.
Helen was a lifelong member of Maple Avenue United Methodist Church, and an active member of the PEO Sisterhood, especially Chapter K in Terre Haute. She delivered Meals on Wheels for over 20 years and was on their board of directors. She was also a Meadowlark volunteer at Meadows Manor East for 25 years.
At the age of 66, Helen joined the Elks’ Women’s Golf League and continued to play well into her nineties. She was also a lifelong member of the Women’s Department Club.
The family would like to thank Helen’s extraordinary caregivers, who added so much joy to her final years.
Memorial contributions may be made to Maple Avenue United Methodist Church, the PEO Foundation, or Meals on Wheels.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, October 9 th at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25 th Street, from 11am to 1pm, with services following, and burial at Roselawn Memorial Park.
