Harold W. Gauer, 89, lifelong resident of Terre Haute, IN, passed away on April 15, 2015. He was a loving and devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, neighbor, parish member, co-worker and friend. He is survived by the love of his life, Margie C. Gauer. They were married for almost 64 years. Survivors also include daughters, Mary Ann Clark (Tony) of Terre Haute; Michele Laine (Mike) of Indianapolis; and Leisa Gustin (Bill) of Holt, MI; six grandchildren, Sarah Wallace (Joey), Nicholas Clark, Eric Laine, Katie Laine, Timothy Gustin and Zachary Gustin; and two great-grandchildren, Trey and Mayah Wallace. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Anna Gauer; brothers Edgar Gauer, Jr. and Herbert Gauer; and grandson Christopher Gustin. Harold was a life-long member of St. Patrick's Church and is a Gerstmeyer Technical High School graduate. He was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He retired from Stran-Steel in 1982 after 38 years of service. Harold was also active in the Schulte High School Booster Club and was instrumental in the construction of the Golden Bear football stadium. He also volunteered at St. Patrick School and Church where he helped with small construction projects, fund-raising activities, Lou Seprodi clean up days, and was always eager to help with needed repairs. His volunteer services earned him several recognitions including Booster of the Year from the St. Patrick School Booster Club and "PiOA Man" from Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. He loved trains, clocks, old tools and was very proud to be an American. He was an avid gardener and grew many vegetables and flowers. He took meticulous care of his yard and enjoyed repairing cars for family and friends and just "fixing things". His many skills included carpentry, electrical, plumbing, car mechanicsa real jack of all trades. Harold, his father and father-in-law built the home where he and Margie still lived until his death. He dearly loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 20, 2015 in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1807 Poplar Street, with Father Rick Ginther officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for 3:00-7:00 P.M. Sunday with a Rosary to be recited at 6:30 P.M. at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, and also prior to services on Monday from 9:00-10:00 A.M. in the church. A celebration of life luncheon will be held after the service for friends and relatives in the Family Life Center adjacent to the Church. The family would like to thank Heart to Heart Hospice, Hands That Serve and the Union ICU for their loving care of Harold in his last days. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Patrick School Facilities Committee for future needs or projects, 1807 Poplar Street, Terre Haute, IN 47803 or to the charity of your choice.
