Guy Belzile, 91, of Terre Haute passed away Sunday, October 20, 2024 at Providence Health Care Center. He was born October 11, 1933 in St. Fabian, Quebec in Canada to Joseph and Ilda Belzile.
Survivors include his children Marc (Teresa) Belzile and Marie (Andy) Theisz; and grandchildren, Josh (Shannon) Belzile, Kyle Belzile, Austin (Allissa) Theisz, Alec Theisz and Drew Theisz; his sister, Therese Belzile; along with friends who were his extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his many siblings, Beverly Lindsay Belzile (first wife and mother of Marc), and his wife of 50 years Lucie Lebel Belzile.
He attended Seminair de Rimouski, graduated from Laval University in Canada and continued his education at University of Iowa as one of the earlier graduating classes in Physical Therapy. Guy moved to Terre Haute to work at St. Anthony Hospital and then became the Administrator and Physical Therapist at Meadows Manor East. During his time with Meadows, he expanded care and services by working to open the north location. A majority of his career was spent doing visits at his patient’s homes through the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) which allowed him the opportunity to teach them how to rehabilitate in their own surroundings.
In addition to working with VNA, Guy was especially passionate about supporting young children with a variety of disabilities at the Children’s Learning Center through Hamilton Center where he did early intervention. Later in his career he was able to continue work with children through Covered Bridge Special Education District and area schools. During that time, he collaborated with teachers in developing adaptive physical education programs for students because he believed that movement and activity were important in the school setting for all students. Guy had the reputation of being a strong advocate that was always upfront about what was best for those he worked with over the years. He loved his work and the people he supported so much that after a brief retirement he went back to working part-time until he turned 80.
Guy loved serving his community and living life to the fullest in all he did. He was an active and long time member in the Kiwanis Club of Terre Haute even serving as President, worked with families and support groups in the Muscular Dystrophy Association and United Cerebral Palsy Association, treasured his friendships he made through the Alliance Francais, volunteered as an usher and in the soup kitchen for years at St. Patrick Church, and participated in several bowling and golf leagues throughout his life. Guy’s greatest joys were celebrations with family and friends, traveling to beaches and Canada, gardening and working in the sunshine, and enjoying a good laugh. He was a huge fan of watching hockey and honestly would embrace watching any sport he could find on TV. He loved his Canadian heritage, but was especially proud of the life he had created here in Terre Haute. Guy enjoyed striking up conversations with people, learning about them and telling a good story or joke along the way.
Visitation will be at 2:00 pm. on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at St. Patrick Church with a Funeral Mass at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Patrick’s Soup Kitchen or Happiness Bag of the Wabash Valley.
