On Friday, July 12, 2019, Gloria Ann Dodd passed away at the age of 91. Gloria was born on December 14, 1927 in Anderson, Indiana to Emerson Ladson Bland and Nedra (Cloyd) Bland. In her early childhood, the family moved to Terre Haute where she attended King Classical School, Sarah Scott JHS, graduated from Wiley High School and then attended Stevens College in Columbia, MO.
Following college, Gloria married Joachim Firman Dodd on August 4, 1951 at St. Benedict Catholic Church. They initially lived in Terre Haute, then for a few years in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis before returning to Terre Haute in 1965 where they remained for the rest of their lives. There they raised three children, Jennifer, Kevin and Kristi.
Gloria (aka Gabby to early friends) was a member of Tri Kappa, the Elks Club and The Country Club of Terre Haute. She especially enjoyed gardening, dogs, cats and Indiana University men's basketball, never missing a game if she could help it. She loved going to Florida every summer on family vacations, baking in the sun on the beach with a good book and a cold beer. After Firman's retirement, they spent time in Florida during the winter, which she continued to do following Firman's death in 1994. There she enjoyed the camaraderie of "The Sunshine Girls". She was known for her sense of humor, which will be missed.
Gloria was preceded in death by her father, Emerson, her mother, Nedra, her step-father, Robert L. Hollis, and her beloved husband, Firman. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Willham (Bruce), her son Kevin (Sherry), her daughter Kristi Dodd-Tank (Mike), nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, to all of whom she was known as "Baba". A family highlight was a celebration of Gloria's 90th birthday at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, MI in May of 2017.
A special thanks to family friends Tracy Bonewell (and husband Brian) whose attentive care for Gloria the past several years allowed her to remain in the home that she loved, with her pets, until the time of her death.
Visitation is scheduled from 12:30 - 1:00 PM on Sunday, July 21, 2019 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM with Father Dan Bedel officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Terre Haute Humane Society, 1811 South Fruitridge Avenue, Terre Haute, IN 47803, www.thhs.org
