Glenden Dale Campbell

Glenden was a 1951 graduate of Ashboro High School in Ashboro, IN. In 1953 he joined the US Army during the Korean War but did not leave the continental US. He graduated with a BS from Indiana State Teachers College and a MS from Indiana State University. He taught high school government and economics at Martinsville, IL, Gerstmeyer Tech, Garfield and Terre Haute North. In 1974 he left the classroom and became the Director of Transportation with 200 school buses and supervising drivers and mechanics. Later he became the Director of General Services which included buildings, grounds and transportation for the Vigo County School Corporation until retirement in 1998.
Glenden joined the Indiana National Guard and received a direct appointment to 2nd Lieutenant. He attended Basic Infantry Officer Course at Ft. Benning, GA US Army Transportation School at Ft. Eustis, VA and Command & General Staff Officer Course at St. Leavenworth, KS. He was the Commander of the S & T Battalion in Terre Haute, IN in the mid 70's. He achieved the rank of full bird Colonel before he retired in December 1993 after serving 39 years. He was appointed by Governors Evan Bayh and Frank O'Bannon to the Indiana State Armory Board from April 1993 to April 2005 overseeing all the National Guard facilities in the State of Indiana. As a member he traveled to Bosnia with an entourage of military and government personnel. Glenden was a life member of the MOAA (Military Officers Association of America) as well as a charter member of the local Ernie Pyle Chapter.
Glen was a staunch Democrat who kept up-to-date on current events and government issues. According to his former student, former IN State Senator and friend Tim Skinner, "we had numerous spirited discussions and he was very opinionated and challenging." Anyone who knew Glenden would agree! Harry Truman said "I never did give anybody hell. I just told the truth and they thought it was hell." He was known by many as The Colonel, Mr. C, The Boss or The DUDE. Glen and his wife, Jan enjoyed traveling to Mexico, Canada, Taiwan, China and spending several winters on the west coast of Florida. He was a 32nd degree mason and former member of the Kerman Grotto, Scottish Rite and Zorah Shrine.
Glenden is survived by his wife of 36 years, Janet Staggs Campbell, his sons and their spouses, Jeff & Melissa Barnaby, Calvin & Tiffany Campbell and Erik & Kristi Barnaby; grandchildren, Olivia, Taylor & Xander Barnaby, Dillon Lynch, Crystal Campbell, Kyara Campbell Craver (Jared), Autumn Campbell, and Caleb Campbell, Lane Sullivan, Alexandra & Stella Barnaby; great grandchildren, Rylan Campbell, Lilah Campbell, and Kaydence Craver; in-laws, Madonna Campbell, Linda & Guy Johnson, and Mike & Lori Staggs; extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2019 in the funeral home with Reverend Wendell Stoneburner officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery in Center Point, IN with Reverend Randy McNeely officiating and Military Honors by Veterans of Clay County. The family would like to thank Heart to Heart Hospice for their compassion and care during these final months. A Celebration of Life will be held following services at 4:00 p.m. at the family residence. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Vigo County Education Foundation.
