George Raborn “Willie” McGuire, 84 of Terre Haute passed away on Saturday, April 29 th surrounded by his family. He was born on April 14, 1939, in Ironton, Ohio to Billie McGuire and Virgie Arden McGuire.
Willie, as all his friends called him, married the love of his life, Reva Maxine Slaughter on April 19 th , 1958, and recently celebrated their 65 th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife, and children Gail Thompson, Dennie McGuire (Teresa), Tom McGuire (Terri) and Cindy Fox Standeford of Terre Haute and Connie Strickland (Chuck) of Ocala Florida; Grandchildren Ashley Strange (Andrew), Ryan McGuire (Kacey), Courtney Mayfield (Bin), Chelsea Crews (Brett), Christina Fox (fiancée Jacob Maxwell), Andrew Fox (Sindy), William “Billy” Thompson and Tommy McGuire; 10 great grandchildren; sister, Dot Gephart, Coshocton Ohio, brother in law Wayne Slaughter (Beth), Coshocton Ohio and many nieces and nephews.
Willie began his career working as a semi-truck driver and eventually started his career with Peabody Coal Company in 1965. He held various positions with Peabody including Mine Superintendent and Director of Operations, retiring after 25 plus years of service. He then worked as a consultant for various businesses up until the time of his death.
Willie’s greatest love was spending time with his family. He spent several winters at their home in Ft. Myers. He loved family get togethers especially on Sunday afternoons and playing cards. His second love was playing golf. Especially with his many golfing buddies from either the Sunday group at The Landing or his Florida golfing group. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 86, VFW No. 104 and Masonic Lodge.
Funeral Services will be held at 1pm, on Monday, May 8 th in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25 th Street with Gregg Davis officiating. Visitation is scheduled from 2pm – 5pm on Sunday, May 7 th at the funeral home. The Pall Bearers will be Ryan McGuire, Andrew Fox, Billy Thompson, Tommy McGuire, Andrew Strange, Jacob Maxwell and Cole Rosselli.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Wabash Valley.
