Genevieve Virginia (Smith) Blair, 99, of Terre Haute, died Wednesday, October 12 in Westminster Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was an educator in the Vigo County and Clay County School Corporations. Genevieve retired from teaching in 1980, after having taught elementary music and language arts at schools in Cory and Farmersburg, followed by service as a member of the high school English Department faculties at Wiley and South Vigo High Schools.
She was born May 17, 1917, in rural Parke County, to Ira and Ora Smith. Genevieve graduated from Bridgeton High School, and earned a B.A. degree in Music and Language Arts and an M.A. in English Language and Literature from Indiana State Teachers College, later Indiana State University.
She was married to Albert E. Blair in 1957, and they enjoyed 45 years of marriage until her husband's death on January 20, 2002. Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and all of her eight brothers and sisters.
She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Rebecca Blair and her husband, Richard Van Rheeden, Swisher, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.
Genevieve was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and a former member of United Methodist Temple Church. She was active in the church music program, United Methodist Women and the Mary Moon Mission Guild. She also was a member of Indiana State University Alumni and the ISU Women's Association, the Indiana State Teacher's Association, and the Vigo County Retired Teachers'' Association. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Westminster Village Heath and Rehabilitation Center. The family wishes to express deep appreciation for the loving, expert care provided by the staffs of Westminster Health and Rehabilitation Center and Hospice of the Wabash Valley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at Memorial United Methodist Church, 2701 Poplar Street, with the Rev. Scott Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled at the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18.
