Gene C. Bonfer, Sr., 87, of Terre Haute passed away Saturday evening, November 11, 2017. He was a retired teacher with the Vigo County School Corporation having taught at Fairbanks Elementary School / Farrington Grove Elementary School. Gene was born January 2, 1930 in Lawrenceburg, IN to Charles W. Bonfer and Marie Schneider Bonfer.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Shirley Ann Shiflet Bonfer; a daughter-in-law, Jeannie Bonfer of Ft. Pierce, FL; two grandchildren, Gene C. Bonfer III of Indianapolis and Matthew T. Bonfer (Michelle) of Jeffersonville, IN; and one great-grandchild, Matthew Thomas Bonfer II. Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Flo All; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Gene was also preceded in death by a son, Gene C. Bonfer, Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Jack All.
Gene was a graduate of Lawrenceburg High School and earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Indiana State University. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served during the Korean War from 1951-1955. Gene was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and Indiana Retired Teachers Association.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M., Friday, November 17, 2017 in Memorial United Methodist Church, 2701 Poplar Street, with Reverend Scott Johnson officiating. Entombment with Military Honors provided by VFW Post #972 will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled prior to services on Friday from 1:00-3:00 P.M. in the church.
