Frances Cole Westrup, 91, of Terre Haute passed away early Thursday morning, September 29, 2016. She was born at home in Terre Haute, September 26, 1925 to Harry John Cole and Anna Kidder Cole. Her husband, Robert Stevens Westrup, preceded her in death in 2005.
Survivors include her children, Anne Elizabeth Owens and her husband, Ben, of Atlanta, GA and John Charles Westrup and his wife, Pam, of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, Lynn Elizabeth Owens, Lisa Owens Scruggs and Eric Scruggs, David Benjamin Owens, Kyle Taylor Westrup and Christina Nichole Westrup, and Susan Westrup Stokes and Justin Stokes; Great-granddaughters Claire Anne Scruggs and Cecilia Bryn Westrup; a niece, Shelley Reed and her husband, Carl Kinnunen; and a nephew, William W. Reed. Her sister, Mary Louise Mendenhall, preceded her in death.
Frances was a 1943 graduate of Wiley High School and attended Indiana State University where she was a member of the Alpha Sorority. Continuing her education, she graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority and a charter member of Pi Alpha Mu National Advertising Fraternity.
Frances took an early interest in Union Hospital of Terre Haute and dedicated a great deal of her life to its causes having served on its Board of Directors for 53 years. During these years of service, she served on the Union Hospital House Committee, Charity Ball Committee, Nominating Committee, Public Relations Committee, and Executive Committee. Frances established the Service League of Union Hospital in 1953 and served as the first President. Frances was the Board Advisor to the Service League of Union Hospital since 1983. She assisted in opening the Union Hospital Gift Shop and Hostess Cart in March 1954. Frances was a faithful supporter of the Chaplain's Office for many years. Her kindness and generosity provided for the Westrup Chapel in the East Building.
In 2002, she was honored as a Sagamore of the Wabash for her service at Union Hospital. Additional awards include the 1993 Terry Award for Volunteer Service, the 2003 Union Hospital Baur Award for Outstanding Service and the 2003 WRTV Channel 6 Leadership Award.
Her memberships included Centenary United Methodist Church, Spay-Neuter League, Service League of Union Hospital, member PEO sisterhood Chapter BN, Country Club of Terre Haute and was a life member of the Vigo County Historical Society. Frances had a strong love of animals, especially dogs and strays and at one time had four of her furry friends in her home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 AM, Friday October 14, 2016 in Centenary United Methodist Church, 301 North 7th Street, with Reverend Mel Camp and Reverend Neva McFarland officiating. Entombment will follow in Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled prior to services on Friday from 10:00 AM to time of service in the church. Pall Bearers will be Kyle Westrup, Ben Owens, David Owens, Bill Pfister, Ralph Grutza and James Twitchell. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
