Frances Josephine Theresa Bauer Taken, 100, of Terre Haute passed away early Sunday morning, December 28, 2014 at Meadows Manor East. She was a registered nurse having worked in Evanston, Illinois. The fourth of eleven children, Frances was born October 6, 1914 in Terre Haute to Anton Bauer, Sr. and Lillian Idabelle Beam Bauer. She was married January 29, 1949 in Chicago, IL to Edward John Taken, Sr. who preceded her in death on January 29, 1997. Survivors include her sons, Edward John Taken, Jr. and his wife, Becky, of Brazil, IN and William J. Taken of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Lorna Gutierrez and her husband, Dimas, and Sam Taken; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Heine; a sister-in-law, Norma Bauer; and many nieces and nephews. Also preceding her in death are her parents; her siblings, Anabelle Sullivan, Margaret Dannenbrink Hoffmann, Anton Bauer (infant), Rose Gantz, Mary Price, Anton Bauer, Jr., Helen McGee, Patricia Smith and Joseph Bauer; and a daughter-in-law, Cathy Taken. Frances graduated from Wiley High School (class of 1932) and after working as a nursing aid at Roselia Maternity Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA she obtained a registered nursing degree from St. Francis School of Nursing, Evanston, Illinois in 1943. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her passions were taking care of her family, baking and cooking. Frances enjoyed the company of all children especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bird watching from her kitchen table was a daily thrill for her. She always had a smile on her face especially when children were in the room. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 2:30 P.M., Wednesday, December 31, 2014 in St. Patrick Church, 1807 Poplar Street, with Father Rick Ginther officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday from 4:00-8:00 P.M. in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
