Richard Nicoson

February 12, 1927 — March 5, 2021

F. Richard Nicoson, 94, of Terre Haute passed away Friday morning, March 5, 2021 in the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care. He was retired from the industrial training division at Ivy Tech, being its first 20 year employee. He was born February 12, 1927 in Terre Haute to Fred E. Nicoson and Ruth Markland Nicoson.  In 1948 Dick married Barbara J. Abbott and they were married for 65 years until her death in 2013.

Survivors include his two sons, Richard “Randy” Nicoson of Terre Haute and Robert D. “Bob” Nicoson of Boston, MA;  two grandchildren, Sarah Wells (Peter) and Zach Nicoson (Carrie);  three grandchildren, Baker, Sawyer and Charlie;  and a special nephew, Bobby  Abbott.  In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Bob Abbott;  and a niece, Angie Worrell.

Dick was a 1945 graduate of Garfield High School where he as a 4 sport athlete and played trumpet in the band.  He received his bachelor’s degree in 1949 from Indiana State Teachers College and completed post-graduate studies from Michigan State University.   While at ISU, Dick played on the baseball team and later was a member of the I Mens Club.  He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II, and afterwards worked at VisKing Corporation, Wabash Fibre Box and Bemis Company.  He was a member of Maple Avenue United Methodist Church and a life member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #86.  He was an avid sports fan especially of ISU Athletics and loved playing golf at the Elks Club.  Earlier in life, Dick coached baseball in both Little League and Babe Ruth and basketball at the former Boys Club.

The family would like to extent their sincerest appreciation to the staff at Cannon Inn, Meadows Manor North and VNA/ Hospice of the Wabash Valley for the loving care they provided to Dick.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 12, 2021 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25 th Street, with Reverend David Rockhill officiating.  Private burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.  Visitation is scheduled for Thursday from 5:00-8:00 PM and also prior to services on Friday from 10:00-11:00 AM. in the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the ISU Athletic Department, c/o ISU Foundation, 30 North 5 th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47807;  American Cancer Society, 5635 W. 96 th Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46278;  or to the charity of your choice.  Funeral information and tributes may be found at www.callahanandhughes.com .
