Evelyn R. "Effie" Giffel, of Terre Haute, passed away at the age of 96 on Tuesday, November 20, 2018. She was born in Terre Haute on September 16, 1922 to Vallee Kautz and Helen Blair Kautz.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Don Nattkemper of Terre Haute. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, William J. Giffel in 1988.
Effie graduated from Wiley High School in 1940 and attended Indiana State University where she balanced her education with working for the war effort as did so many young women of the day. A highlight of her life was when she married her husband, Bill, when he returned from World War II on January 17, 1946. She was a supportive and devoted wife as her husband finished his education with advanced degree work at several colleges and universities across the country, as he pursued a teaching career. Effie was particularly proud that her daughter, Gail, chose to enter the teaching profession as well.
In the 1960's she joined a group of women who made puppets and traveled to all the local schools where they put on the play "Punch and Judy". Late in the 1960's she went to work part-time at McMillan's Sporting Goods Store to help with Gail's educational expenses.
Effie and Bill loved to travel and made several trips to Europe and England and also to visit their good friends in Kentucky. After Bill died she continued to make trips with friends. She loved to drive so she was always willing to take her friends places. Effie was a great cook and hosted many dinner parties. She and Bill were part of a group of six couples who frequently got together on Saturday nights in each other's home or at the Sycamore Club.
Effie took great pleasure in keeping up with the activities and exploits of family, and extended family to whom she was affectionately known as "Grandma Effie" and "Aunt Effie" and loved to rejoice in their accomplishments. She was a member and past president of the Woman's Department Club and Chapter K of P.E.O Sorority. She was also a member of Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Swope Alliance, Elks Ladies' 9-Hole Golf League, and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
