Ernest R. (Ernie) Woods Ernest R. Woods (Ernie) passed away February 8, 2013 at Terre Haute Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family and passed into the waiting arms of his loving wife of 50 years Georgia Mae. Ernie was born in New Orleans, La. January 9, 1924 to Ernest R. Woods and Alice Peton Woods. He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Mae Hetzel Woods, whom he married on November 4, 1950. Ernie retired from the Terre Haute Tribune Star after 40 years He and Georgia raised 3 wonderful children, son, Ernest R. "Woody" Woods and his wife Brenda; two daughters, Amy Dowen and her husband Frank and Kathy Wilcoxon and her husband Rick; Their loving grandchildren, Lisa Behringer and her husband Mike, Jason Wetzel and his wife Leslie, Danielle Woods and her fiancé, Brian Homsangpradit, Nikki Snodgrass , Amy Connally and her husband Stan, Ashley Dowen, Elizabeth Dowen and Tami Hanson and her husband Kyle; Great grandchildren, Shelby, Elizabeth, and Brandin Behringer; Chandler, Harry and Lucy Wetzel, Regan Tucker, Kori Dowen, Doran and Mya Smith, and Amiah and Sadie Hanson; a niece, Jerilyn Kenny and her husband Lloyd; a great nephew, Lloyd "Sonny" Kenny, Jr.; a dear family friend, Elisha "Pee Wee" Hamblin; and his best friend, "Buster". Ernie was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, June Culver; a brother-in-law, Jerry Culver; and a grandson, Scott M. Dowen. Ernie attended St. Aloysius's schools excelling in Basketball, Baseball and Football. After graduation he went on to serve in the US Navy on board the USS Breese, during World War II and was Honorably Discharged. He then went on to play Baseball 5 years in the Triple I League, won the Leagues Batting Title in 1947 and was a member of the 1950 League Championship Team Terre Haute Phillies. He loved golfing, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He was also a member of the Rea Park Men's Club. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 A.M Tuesday, February 12, 2013 in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church with Father Rick Ginther officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with military rites by Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #972. Visitation is scheduled from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Monday, February 11, 2013 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street. Our parents will be truly missed and will remain in our hearts forever. We would like to thank Dr. Mendoza, Terre Haute Regional Hospital and especially the wonderful nurses on IMC, Candy and Michelle of Vista Care Hospice, the doctors and nurses at Union Hospital and the staff at Cobblestone Crossings for the excellent care given to our father over the last 3 years.
