Eric T. Thieme

March 27, 1981 — February 11, 2016

Eric Thieme, age 34, passed away at his home in McCordsville, Indiana on February 11, 2016, following a long battle with epithelioid sarcoma, leaving a void that will never be filled in the hearts of everyone who loved him. He will long be remembered for his sense of humor, enthusiasm for life, and dedication to his family and work.Eric was born on March 27, 1981 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. As a child, Eric loved all sports, but especially soccer, golf, and downhill skiing. He played travel soccer for many years, and at Portage Central High School, Eric lettered in soccer and tennis. After graduating from PCHS in 1999, Eric attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he earned a bachelors degree in economics, was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, and met the love of his life, Ann Ries Gillespie from Terre Haute, Indiana. Eric and Ries married on May 20, 2006. In 2007 Eric graduated summa cum laude from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, where he was the Articles Editor of the Indiana Law Review, a member of the Moot Court Order of the Barristers, and recipient of the Eli Lilly Co. Law Alumni Scholarship. At the time of his passing, Eric was serving as Counsel at the law firm of Faegre Baker Daniels in Indianapolis.During Erics short life he was able to accomplish and experience more than most do in a lifetime. In his professional career, he developed a national reputation for his experience and expertise at the intersection of health care, privacy and security, and information technology during the five and a half years that he worked as General Counsel and Compliance Officer, and later as Vice President of Administration and General Counsel, for the Indiana Health Information Exchange. In August, he returned to Faegre Baker Daniels as Counsel and Leader of the firms health information technology (HIT) practice. Eric was a leader in his profession, including serving on the Executive Committee and as continuing legal education chair of the Indianapolis Bar Associations health and life sciences section; an advisory board member for the Hoosier Healthcare Innovation Challenge; and workgroup member of Managed Emergency Surge for Healthcare, Inc. Outside of his professional career he enjoyed traveling, boating, golfing, and socializing with friends and family. But most of all, Eric loved his wife, Ries, and their four beautiful children, Hayden (7), Hadley (5), Hampton (3), and Hudson (20 months), all of whom survive. Eric is also survived by his parents, Janet and Tim Thieme of Portage, Michigan; his in-laws, Margot and Doug Gillespie, Barnes (Mary Beth) Gillespie, and Caitlin (Brandon) Voelker; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephew.Visitation is scheduled from 4:00-8:00 pm on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church, 8155 Oaklandon Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46236.
