Elizabeth Gartland Grimes, 90, of Terre Haute passed away Wednesday evening, April 26, 2017. She was born June 23, 1926 in Indianapolis to Peter Valentine Gartland and Delight Maher Gartland. Her husband, William M. Grimes, preceded her in death on April 20, 1994.
Survivors include her sons and daughters, Michael G. Grimes, Elizabeth Haley and her husband William, William G. Grimes and his wife, Peggy, Ann Heffelmire and her husband, Joseph, David A. Grimes and his wife, Pam, Mary Risinger and her husband, Mark, and Peter A. Grimes and his wife, Pam; and 16 grandchildren, James Grimes, Kevin Haley, Sister Josephine Rose (Kathleen Haley), Shannon Grimes, Molly Klen, Karen Ednalino, Andrew Grimes, Abby Miller, Betsy Santoro, Brian Grimes, Rebecca Grimes, Matt Risinger, Kyle Risinger, Joseph Risinger, Tyler Grimes and Kelsey Grimes. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren, Jacob Haley, Cecilia Haley, Connor Klen, Ethan Klen, Noah Klen, Isabelle Ednalino, Jacob Ednalino, Kathryn Ednalino, William Santoro, Henry Santoro and Thomas Santoro; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was also preceded in death by three granddaughters, Catherine Elizabeth Grimes, Amy Delight Heffelmire and Elizabeth Jean Heffelmire; a great grandson, David Francis Haley; and two sisters, Maryellen Martin and Katherine Finneran.
Betty graduated from Ladywood High School in Indianapolis and from St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN. She worked for the Indianapolis Star as a featured columnist before marrying the love of her life, Bill Grimes in 1949. She devoted her life to her loving family and her many cherished friends in whom she shared her kind, joyful, and giving heart.
Betty served as an officer and Board member of Gartland Foundry Co., Inc., a company her father started in 1902. She was a beloved member of St. Benedict Parish and served in many roles throughout the parish including being an Extraordinary Minister of the Blessed Sacrament. Betty was very active in her children's schools as member of Mother's Club at both St. Patrick and Schulte High School. She was a member of numerous organizations and clubs including Rose Ladies Aid Society, Women's Department Club, CCTH, and Terre Haute Turf Club.
The Grimes family would like to express their overwhelming gratitude to Dr. Oommen and his staff, the nurses in the Interventional Radiology Department at Union Hospital, and VNA/Hospice of the Wabash Valley for their loving and compassionate care of our Mother.
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 12:05 P.M., Monday, May 1, 2017 in St. Benedict Church, 111 South 9th Street. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday from 3:00-7:00 P.M. in the church and on Monday from 11:00 AM - 12:00 Noon, also in the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
