Edward John Taken Jr.

Edward John Taken, Jr., 71, of Brazil passed away Saturday evening, February 13, 2021 at the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care.  He was a retired Police Officer for Crane Naval Base.  Ed was born January 13, 1950 in Evanston, IL to Edward John Taken, Sr. and Frances Bauer Taken.

Known as “John” to his family, he is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rebecca “Becky” Graves Taken;  daughter, Lorna Gutierrez (Dimas) of Colorado Springs, CO;  son, Samuel Taken (Briana) of Staunton, IN;  five grandchildren, Aidan Taken, Nathaniel Taken, Violet Taken, Adriana Gutierrez and  Eli Gutierrez;  and one step-grandson, Mauro Gutierrez.  Also surviving is his brother, William J. Taken of Terre Haute;  two sisters-in-law, Julia Johannsen and Martha Lake;  and two brothers-in-law, Richard Graves and Rodger Graves.  He was preceded in death by his parents;  and a sister-in-law, Catherine Ann Taken.

John was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War where he held the rank of Buck Sergeant stationed in Germany while serving with the Army Signal Corps.  For John, being with his family and serving his God were his #1 priorities in life.  He enjoyed firearms and recreational shooting, nature, planting trees, and his dogs.

Due to covid-19, the family will have a Mass of Christian Burial conducted at 12:05 PM, Friday, February 19, 2021 in St. Benedict Catholic Church, 111 South 9 th Street, with Father Martin Day, OFM Conv. officiating.  The family is also planning to have a memorial service at a later date.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25 th Street.  If friends should so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Fraternal Order of Police, 1655 South 14 th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47802;  any Veterans’ Military Organization;  to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, PO Box 98018, Washington, DC 20090-8018;  or if you would wish to plant a tree in John’s memory, that would also be very much appreciated.  Funeral information and tributes may be found at www.callahanandhughes.com .
