Edward S. Howaniec

Edward S. Howaniec of Terre Haute, IN passed away Saturday evening, October 16, 2021 in Providence Health Care.  He was a Master Controller for WTHI-TV for 50 years and 6 months.  Ed was born November 14, 1930 in Ludlow, PA to Anna Wodziak Howaniec and Albert K. Howaniec.

Ed spent his early years building radios and was very interested in drama and band clubs.  He graduated from Ludlow High School in 1948.  After high school he worked for Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Gas Transmission Co.  Ed was drafted into the U.S. Army and was trained as a medic during the height of the Korean War.  After military service, Ed completed his education in television broadcasting at N.Y.C.C. in New York City.  While there he worked at CBS Television where he met hundreds of news makers, actors, singers and dancers.  Ed left New York to work for WTHI – TV in Terre Haute.  In his spare time, he enrolled at ISU where he met the girl of his dreams on the 1 st day of class.  Linda R. Phegley and Edward S. Howaniec were married March 2, 1957 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sullivan, IN.  They have been married for 64 years.

Ed is survived by his wife, Linda Phegley Howaniec;  one son, Edward Howaniec (Anita) of Craigville, IN;  two grandsons, Edward G. Howaniec (Kristy) and Joseph A. Howaniec;  three brothers-in-law, Harry Glotz, Steve Phegley (Janice) and Phil Phegley (Dalene);  a sister-in-law, Sara Chowning;  and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents;  2 brothers, Stanley and Joseph;  and 4 sisters, Ann Pollack, Mary Moreli, Stella Dulan and Helen Glotz.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 12:00 Noon, Thursday, October 21, 2021 in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1807 Poplar Street, with Father Ben Syberg officiating.  Visitation is scheduled prior to services from 11:00 AM-12:00 Noon in the church.  Burial arrangements will take place at a later date.  Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25 th Street.  If friends should so desire, memorial contributions may be made to VNA/Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 400 8 th Avenue, Terre Haute, IN 47804.  Funeral information is also available at www.callahanandhughes.com .
