Edward E. "Ed" Deischer, 70, of North Port, FL and formerly of Terre Haute, IN, passed away Wednesday morning, August 22, 2018 at Englewood Hospice House in Port Charlotte, FL after a courageous five-month battle with metastatic prostate cancer. Ed was born October 31, 1947 in Terre Haute. A 1965 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School, Ed went on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana State University.
Ed was a correctional program specialist for the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons in Terre Haute, from which he retired after 25 years of service. Never one to have idle hands or mind, Ed worked at the Hamilton Center as a job coach following his retirement. He also held a lifetime teaching certificate in the state of Indiana.
A devoted husband, father, and friend, Ed was always someone you could count on for anything. Ed had a passion for metal-working, welding, and wrought iron design and fabrication. After moving to Florida, Ed enjoyed boating and fishing, gardening, and he even began writing poetry. However, nothing was as cherished as spending time with his grandchildren, to whom he was affectionately known as "Pappy."
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Austin Deischer and Leveuda DeWitt Deischer, and one granddaughter, Madison Williams. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Susan Gilbert Deischer; two daughters, Stacey Deischer of Terre Haute and Samantha Boyll of Tampa, FL; son-in-law Timothy Boyll of Tampa, FL; five grandchildren Arianna Boyll (20), Roman Williams (19), Nicky Williams (17), Zoe Boyll (16), and Garrett Williams (15); one brother, Paul Deischer of North Port, FL; and several cousins and in-laws in both Indiana and Florida.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 1:00-2:30 pm at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street in Terre Haute, with a memorial service beginning at 2:30 pm. A private burial will be at Highland Lawn Cemetery after the service. If friends should so desire, memorial donations may be made to The Hamilton Center Foundation.
