E. V. "Curly" Halt, Jr., 97, of Terre Haute passed away early Friday morning, March 30, 2018. He was a teacher and a former Principal of Terre Haute South Vigo High School. Curly was born August 8, 1920 in Terre Haute to Eulice Vern Halt, Sr. and Felda Wood Halt. His wife, Suzanne Anita Harden Halt, preceded him in death in 2000.
Survivors include a grand-niece, Lisa McGowen and her husband, Michael, of Plainfield, IN and a great-nephew, Adam McGowen of Chicago, IL. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Donna Wilkerson; and a nephew, David Wilkerson.
Curly was a graduate of Wiley High School and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana State University. He began his teaching career at Lawrenceville, IL and continued at Jerseyville, IL, Alton, IL, Terre Haute Wiley High School where he coached boys basketball and Terre Haute South Vigo where he was named its first principal. Curly ended his career at Honey Creek Middle School where he taught, and also coached girls basketball. He attended Faith Wesleyan Church and was a member of the Terre Haute Elks Club and Greater Terre Haute Kiwanis Club where he was a past district governor.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, April 3, 2018 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Pastor Bob McHenry officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled prior to services on Tuesday from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM in the funeral home.
