Dr. G. Elton Graves, 69, of Terre Haute passed away early Saturday morning, April 1, 2017 at home with his family at his side. He was a Professor of Mathematics at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology from 1981-2017. Elton was born July 16, 1947 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Charles Lyman Graves and Alice Louise Graves.
Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Rebecca Taclibon Graves; two sons, Evan (Miranda Crispin) Graves and Eric Graves; six grandchildren; brothers, Elliott (Frances) Graves and Howard (Julie Baller) Graves; a brother-in-law, Tong (Glenda) Taclibon of the Philippines; a sister-in-law, Fely Castro of the Philippines; and five nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Elena Veach.
Elton attended Willamette University in Oregon where he received his undergraduate degree, received his Masters of Arts Degree from the University of Minnesota and his Doctor of Arts Degree from Idaho State University. He taught at Mindanao State University for three years where he met and married his wife, Rebecca Taclibon in August of 1975. While a Professor at Rose-Hulman, Elton served as Director of Fast Track Calculus, was Advisor to Pi Mu Epsilon Math Honor Society, was Chair of Admissions and Standing Committee, was Indiana Director of American Mathematics Competitions, and was Francis Vigo Chapter Coordinator for the Wabash Valley MATHCOUNTS Competition. He was honored with the Distinguished Educators and Service Award from the American Society for Engineering Education (2009), was the 1st educator to earn the ASEE Mathematics Director Best Paper Award, received the Dean's Outstanding Teacher Award in 2009 and was one of the "Best 300 Professors in America" as noted in the 2012 Princeton Review. Elton was a member of Memorial United Methodist where he was very active in church functions, especially Missionary work.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, April 8, 2017 in Memorial United Methodist Church, 2701 Poplar Street, with Reverend Scott Johnson officiating. Visitation is scheduled prior to services from 10:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. in the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
