We regretfully announce the passing of 86 year old Donald "Izzy" Isbell, a long time Terre Haute resident. Most folks know Izzy from his time working with NCR, his Froggy's Tavern, Dever Distributorship or Newport Hillclimb participation. He was also a member of the American Legion, Marine Corps League, Eagles, Elks, Ducks Unlimited and a 3rd degree Mason and Shriner.
He was immensely proud of his service to his country in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and continued to serve through his activity in the area's VFW Halls.
Izzy worked hard and played harder, someone once referring to him as an "ambassador of humor", a compliment of the highest order.
Most everyone who knew him will likely have one or more amusing and entertaining stories to tell of their adventures together. Izzy never met a stranger, and shared an optimistic outlook on life even during his longtime battle with various forms of cancer. He was preceded in death by his endearing wife Deanna. He is survived by two sons and their wives, three granddaughters, one grandson, two great-grandchildren and an enormous group of friends and acquaintances
When not relaxing with his pets and watching deer gathering outside the windows of his cabin on the hill, he enjoyed mushroom hunting, riding his tractor and mowing grass, in addition to evenings sitting on the deck of a nearby pond.
A heartfelt thank you to all the VNA/Hospice caregivers, friends who visited with words of encouragement and especially to Linda and Kim who were always by his side, lovingly ensuring Izzy was comfortable and aware he was not going through his final days alone.
With heavy hearts we say farewell to our dearly beloved father, friend, and acquaintance, as we all share his passing together.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested donations in his honor be made to either of the following:
VNA & Hospice of The Wabash Valley (web site or check to 400 8th Ave. Terre Haute IN 47804). The American Legion Post 104 (check to 2690 Ft. Harrison Rd. Terre Haute, IN 47804). VFW Post 972 (check to 1111 Veterans Square, Terre Haute, IN 47807)
The body will be cremated and interred at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Terre Haute.
A celebration of life gathering will occur at American Legion Post 104 on August 29, 2019, from 5 - 9 pm, with a full Color Guard ceremony at 6:30 pm.
