Dr. Dixie Lee Stahr of Terre Haute, Indiana passed away July 17, 2018, in Springhill Village. She was born February 24, 1931 in Dowagiac, Michigan to Floyd Stahr and Evelyn (Gawthrop) Stahr.
Dr. Stahr was a retired professor of physical education at Indiana State University.
Dixie graduated from high school in 1949 and gave up an opportunity to train for the Olympic diving team to enroll at Indiana State. During her undergraduate work, Dixie participated in many activities and became an "I" woman in 2 years. In 1951 she was crowned the first Miss Indiana State and was runner-up in the Miss Indiana contest where her talent was synchronized swimming. She posed for a statue which is located on campus and Gamma Phi Beta selected her as the "Ideal Sorority Girl". She was also a member of the Dolphin Club for four years.
She received her Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from ISU in 1953, and moved to Crawfordsville where she taught physical education. She received her Master of Science degree from ISU in 1960. She was a member of the faculty at ISU until 1966, when she became a graduate assistant instructor on the physical education staff at the University of IOWA where she obtained her Doctor of Philosophy Degree in 1967. She returned to ISU where she taught until retirement.
Dixie was very active in sports, both as an athlete and as a coach. During her time as a faculty member at ISU, she sponsored the Dolphin Club, coached the swimming and badminton teams, and coached two of her badminton team members to Nationals.
Since her retirement in 1991 she enjoyed swimming, fishing, bowling and golf. In 1991 she was inducted into the Terre Haute Bowling Hall of Fame for her contributions to the sport through teaching and participation.
Dr. Stahr is survived by companion Dr. Barbara Kelley and a nephew Andrew Downey of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
