Diane Kay Smith, 74, of Terre Haute passed away Friday, April 5, 2024 in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born December 13, 1949 in Terre Haute to Bernard Robert Feiler and Jane Ann Sholten Feiler.
Survivors include her husband, Gaylon Smith; son, Josh Smith and wife Ashlee; very loved grandson, Eli Smith; brother, Patrick Feiler; cousins, Kathy and Paul Danielsen; and several other cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, aunts, uncles, and special aunt and uncle, Madeline and John Dalton.
Diane worked supporting families and children her entire career, through the Vigo County Welfare Department, Hamilton Center, Alternatives for Living & Learning School, Associated Psychologists, and Family Service Association. This included teaching at Indiana State University, where she had also obtained her Master of Science in Agency Counseling. She held several counseling licenses, including being a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor (RPT-S). Diane was the first certified Play Therapist in Terre Haute.
Diane was a lifelong member of St. Benedict Catholic Church where she taught multiple ages of religious education for almost 40 years, including a period as the religious education director. She was a member of the Purdue University Vigo County Extension Homemakers club and the Indiana Play Therapy Association, among others.
Diane devoted her life to her family, her friends, and the countless other families she helped and encouraged through her career, her church, and through service to her community. She loved gardening, cooking, traveling, volunteering, and especially loved children and could always be found in the middle of where they were playing.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:05 P.M. on Monday, April 15, 2024 in St. Benedict Catholic Church with Father Bob St. Martin officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 – 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 14, 2024 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street and one hour prior to mass on Monday at the church.
