Dennis Lee Ellrod, 64, of Terre Haute, died Thursday, September 24, 2020 in Indianapolis at Indiana University Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born August 18, 1956 to Eugene E. Ellrod, Sr. and Norma J. Latham Ellrod. Dennis is survived by his children, Kyle Ellrod and Kaylee Ellrod and their mother, Tammy Ellrod; and his mother, Norma Lowery. Also surviving are siblings Eugene Ellrod, Jr. and David Ellrod of Florida, Mike Lawson of Tennessee, Greg Lowery of Terre Haute, Chris Lowery, and Diane Stultz (Darrell) of Kentucky; a special aunt, Ramona Hester (Gary) of Sullivan; and special friend, Karan Elliott. Dennis is preceded in death by his father, Eugene E. Ellrod, Sr., his grandparents, and his beloved dog, Sphynx. Dennis had a hearty love for history and enjoyed coaching and playing on several softball teams, coaching at the Boys and Girls Club, attending Major League Baseball games, the Indy 500, boating, fishing, and camping. He loved to spend time with his kids. Dennis attended Terre Haute North in the class of 1974. He joined the US Army in 1974 and was stationed with the 1st Infantry Division, “Big Red 1”, in Germany until 1977. He then joined the Indiana Air National Guard where he retired after 21 years. Dennis was an Electrical/Environmental Technician with the 181st Fighter Wing in Terre Haute. He was most proud of his medals awarded for Expert Marksmanship. During retirement he continued service to the community by substitute teaching. He was a member of the American Legion Post 328 in Riley, the VFW Post 972, and Disabled American Veterans. A memorial graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 17th, 2020 in Highland Lawn Cemetery with Pastor Rick Swan and Riley American Legion Post #328 officiating. Family and friends are encouraged to wear masks and practice social distancing. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
