Dennis E. Ehm

Dennis Eugene Ehm, 81, of Indianapolis, IN, formerly of Terre Haute, was called to his heavenly home surrounded by his loving family on December 28, 2014 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. He was born in rural Stuttgart, KS on October 19, 1933 to Arnold and Minnie (Preuss) Ehm. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and remained a faithful member until his death. Dennis was a 1952 graduate of Phillipsburg High School. He attended Wartburg College and graduated from the University of Denver in 1959 with a BA in Sociology. He served in the US. Army for 3 years in the Army Signal Corp. He began his career in corrections at the State School for Boys in Gatesville, TX., moving on to the US Bureau of Prisons as a Case Manager and retired after 23 years. He continued employment at the TH Federal Credit Union and First Financial Bank. Dennis is survived by his wife, Leota Soodsma Ehm of 52 years. To this union 2 sons were born, Gordon Jay and his wife Cristina of Pittsboro, IN and Randall and his wife Meg of Raleigh, NC, five grandchildren, Austin, Katie, Michaela, Julianna, and Grayson; brother Virgil and wife Melba, brother and sister-in-law, Vernon and Gladys Soodsma, nephew Dwight Ehm and niece, Diane (James) Zillinger. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson Kennon August Ehm. He has been active in the Terre Haute community doing volunteer work at various organizations - Meals on Wheels, Hospice of the Wabash Valley, Boy Scouts, Habitat for Humanity, Mended Hearts and the Men's Breakfast Group at Trinity. He taught Sunday School classes and was the Financial Secretary and Treasurer at Christ Lutheran. Dennis enjoyed showing his antique 1948 Ford pickup at numerous car shows in the Wabash Valley. He was a member of the Antique and Classic Car Club, Good Cheer, Christ Lutheran and Trinity Lutheran Churches, and recently a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Brownsburg. Dennis and Leota had recently moved to a retirement center in Indianapolis. Funeral Services will be held Thursday January 1, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Dana Newhouse officiating. Visitation is scheduled prior to services from 12:00 to 2:00 PM. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 2620 Ohio Blvd., Terre Haute, 47803 and Messiah Lutheran Church, 801 S. Green St., Brownsburg, IN 46112. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street,Terre Haute.
