David Alan Halsted

April 12, 1941 — February 13, 2014

David Alan Halsted, 72, of Terre Haute died at his Westminster residence on February 13, 2014. David was born April 12, 1941 in Cleveland, OH to Robert E. and Jane Dunbar Halsted. He grew up in Jamestown, NY where he grew to love the nearby Chautauqua community. He interrupted his education at the University of Michigan to join the Army and serve in Intelligence in the Phillipines. He graduated from Michigan with a degree in accounting and a fiancée whom he married in 1966. He joined one of the "Big 8" accounting firms in Detroit, became a CPA and decided that he'd rather be in operations than auditing. He was an accounting manager at the Jervis B. Webb Co. then moved to Terre Haute in 1984 to be CFO at Tri-Industries- his favorite job. He retired early for health reasons from Champion Bus Co. in Michigan and returned to Terre Haute. David followed a family tradition of professional volunteerism and worked faithfully at Union Hospital for the Chaplain's Office. He was a proud member of SCORE, a past board member of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, past Treasurer and current committee member at Centenary United Methodist Church. He was also past president of the Taxpayers' Association of Terre Haute. David loved his family; the friends who enjoyed a whimsical accountant; foreign travel; Chautauqua; bridge; swimming; his cats; politics and movies. He remained a devoted Wolverine and followed UM sports religiously. David is survived by his loving wife Mary (Short) of Terre Haute; his beloved daughter Heather Halsted-Ols of Milwaukee, WI; mother Jane Halsted of Columbus, NC; sisters Joan Halsted of NY and Venice, FL and Marcia Hanks (Larry) of Raleigh, NC; brother-in-law George Short (Mary) of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI; and several cousins and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father and his greatly loved son, David. The memorial service will be held Friday, February 21 at Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Jimmy Moore officiating. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 3 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church or the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra.
