Charles E. Uhl

January 11, 1922 — February 16, 2015

Charles E. Uhl of Terre Haute passed away on February 16, 2015 at 4:45 am at Union Hospital after a short illness. He was born January 11, 1922 in Harrison County, Indiana to Clement and Florence (Jacobi) Uhl. Charles graduated in 1940 from Morgan Township High School, where he was class valedictorian, and attended New Albany Business College. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving under General Mark Clark in Europe, and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. Charles began his career with Public Service Indiana (PSI) as a clerk in 1941. He married Imogene Humphrey May 19, 1951, and had three children: Steve, Mark, and Jane. Charles and Imogene were together for 54 years until Imogene's death in 2005. Charles' employment with PSI (now Duke Energy) spanned 42 years, and he worked for the company in nine Indiana cities, including Terre Haute. At the time of his retirement in 1984, he was Vice President of Marketing and Customer Services. He remained in Terre Haute after retiring, and it has been his home for 46 years. Charles believed in leaving the world a better place than he found it, and everywhere he lived benefitted from his belief. A partial list of his volunteer efforts include SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives), United Way, Boy Scouts, Boys Club, Arts Illiana, Vigo County Historical Society, Friends of Historic Allen Chapel, TREES, Inc., and the Vigo County Education Foundation. He was a 50-year member of Kiwanis International, serving as an officer most of the time. He was a regular blood donor, and his donations totaled 95 pints. Honors Charlie received over the years include the Man and Boy Award for service to the Boys Club, the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver Award, the Excellence in Volunteerism Award from Gibault School for Boys, the Kiwanis Handclasp Award, and the prestigious Indianapolis Star Jefferson Award. He was a lifelong Catholic and an active member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church since 1969. He served for 24 years as the church's volunteer business manager and helped as a Eucharistic Minister and a server at Masses. He was also a vital part of the church's Finance Committee for many years. With all he did, Charles' circle of friends and colleagues was huge. Every time he left a restaurant, a sports venue, or a community event, he encountered people he knew. Charlie was an avid sports fan, following St. Louis Cardinal baseball, Sycamore, Pacer and Celtic basketball, and Colts football. He loved travel, golfing, and walking. He walked an average of four miles per day. The last 20 years of his life he walked over 23,000 miles! A loving husband, father, brother, and friend, Charles is survived by his sisters Mary Libs, Lorine Martin, Mary Ann McElroy, and Sharon Newton. He is also survived by his children: Steve Uhl and his wife, Dodie of Jasper, IN; Mark Uhl and his wife, Debbie of New Palestine, IN; and Jane Minderman and her husband Tom of Vincennes, IN; and grandchildren Chad (and Misti) Uhl, Ryan (and Keasha) Uhl; Nicholas (and Erin) Uhl; Dane (and Shelly) Uhl; Heather (and Terry) Derbyshire; and Ashley Gierke and her fiancé Matt Quoss. In addition, he was proud to have ten (soon eleven) great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Clement and Florence Uhl, his stepmother Agatha Uhl, his wife Imogene Uhl, and his brother, Bernard Uhl. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 A.M.
