Charles Gilbert Seitz, 79, of Terre Haute passed away on Monday, May 30, 2016 in Union Hospital. He was born May 12, 1937 in New Albany, IN to Charles Morgan Seitz and Anna Louise Brasher Keal.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Elaine Hurst Seitz; children, Colonel Steve Seitz and his wife Eneicy of Enterprise, AL, Dr. Susan Cobb and her husband Jeff and Dr. Stacy Mason and her husband Travis all of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Ian Seitz, Brianna Burgess, Ethan Burgess, Ryan Cobb, Chloe Mason, Caden Mason, and Carly Mason. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Seitz; his mother and step-father, Anna Louise and John Keal; sister, Kathy Bertalon; and grandson, Beau Burgess.
Charlie was a charter member of Memorial United Methodist Church serving on many church boards including the Administrative Board, Pastor Parish Relations, Sunday School Teacher, Usher, and Coach of the church league basketball team. He was also a member of the Wabash Valley Sports Center, Lost Creek Conservation Club, and the American Legion. Charlie played in the Indiana State High School Basketball Championship in 1955, attended LSU and graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan on basketball scholarships, and received his masters degree from Indiana State University in 1965. Charlie was in the Air National Guard from 1960 1967 which included a tour of duty in France during the Berlin Wall Crisis. He started his teaching career at Honey Creek Jr. High School in 1962 before moving to Sarah Scott Jr. High School, where he was the track and basketball coach at both schools. He then went to Garfield in 1967 where he was the basketball and tennis coach. In 1971 after the consolidation he moved to North Vigo High School where he was the boys and girls tennis coach and the girls basketball coach and eventually retired in 2010. His junior high and high school basketball teams earned county scoring records. Charlie also coached basketball for many years at the Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club along with coaching baseball at Terre Haute North Little League. He had a profound impact on thousands of students in the Wabash Valley. He enjoyed restoring cars, painting houses, coaching, and teaching history. Charlie was a wonderful husband, superior father, and an influential and loving grandfather.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2016 in Memorial United Methodist Church, 2701 Poplar Street, Terre Haute, IN with Reverend Scott Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4:00 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2016 in the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Vigo County Education Foundation.
