Charles Joseph Martin, 89, of Terre Haute, passed away in the morning of November 7, 2016. Charlie, as he was known to friends and family, was born on April 12, 1927 in Nashville, Tennessee to James Michael Martin and Madie Ragan Martin.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rosalie Brunello Martin; daughters, Ann M. Antonini and Jane M. Anas (Basil); grandchildren, Nicholas Anas, Victoria Antonini, Carina Antonini and Antonio Antonini; his sister, Madie Marie Abner (David Lynn); and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, James Henry Martin and Michael Francis Martin.
A graduate of Gerstmeyer Tech High School, Charlie left at the age of 17 to join the war effort and serve his country in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked for the U.S. Border Patrol, securing the American border in Southern California. Continuing his public service, Charlie became a National Guardsman here in Indiana. In 1962, the U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy deputized Charlie as a U.S. Federal Marshal, along with 500 National Guardsmen and sent them to the University of Mississippi to ensure the safe integration of the university amidst rioting and racial violence. Charlie received a letter of recognition from Robert Kennedy for his efforts.
He went on to have long careers with the Federal Bureau of Prisons at the Penitentiary in Terre Haute and later at Alcan. After retiring from Alcan, Charlie worked 10 years for Lowes Home Improvement.
Additionally, Charlie was a long-time parishioner of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Terre Haute, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Charlie will be remembered by all for his cheerful good nature and generosity. He was a loving husband and proud father who enjoyed, above all, the happy times spent with his beloved family and good friends.
Visitation will take place on Friday, November 11, 2016 from 4:00-8:00 PM with a Rosary to be recited at 7:30 PM in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Saturday, November 12th at 9:30 AM in St. Benedict Catholic Church, 111 South 9th Street, with Father Martin Day, OFM Conv. officiating. Burial with Military Graveside Honors provided by VFW Post #972 will be at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Terre Haute North High School- Backpack Program. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
