Charles Luther Compton

Charles Luther Compton, of Terre Haute Indiana, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2024 at the age of 89.

Charles was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on September 21, 1934 to the late Luther Compton and Ruby Parrett Compton. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1952, attended Indiana State University, and then served in the Navy during the Korean War. He married Elizabeth Johnson Compton and they celebrated 50 years of marriage together before she passed away in 2007.

Charles was a businessman and was the owner of several businesses throughout his years in Terre Haute. He was a member of the Maple Avenue United Methodist Church and a proud member of Twelve Points Masonic Lodge 769. His Masonic journey began over 60 years ago at the age of 29. He was Master of Terre Haute Lodge 19 in 1974. He later transferred to the Twelve Points Lodge 769 and served as treasurer, chaplain and trustee. He was a member of the Vigo County Association of Actual Past Masters. He joined the Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute in 1975 and served as Thrice Potent Master from 2008-2009. He was crowned as a 33rd Degree Mason in 2011. He received the Commandery Distinguished Service Award and Knight York Cross of Honor.

He is survived by his son Dr. David (Valerie) Compton of Bloomington, Indiana; daughter Cathy Compton of Vandalia, OH; and five grandchildren, Alaina and Jake Dull and Matthew, Drew and Lauren Compton. He was preceded in death by wife Elizabeth, brother, George Compton D.D.S., sister, Alice Rushing, and his parents.

Masonic funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 P.M. Noon on Saturday, March 23, 2024 in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. Visitation will be prior to services from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. on Saturday. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
