Carolina “Carrie” Werneke passed away peacefully into the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 26, 2023. She was born on September 30, 1931, to Roy Fogle and Florence Campbell Fogle.
Carrie graduated from Wiley High School in 1949. She later studied Real Estate at Indiana State University. Carrie met her first and only love, Budd Werneke, in 1946. They married on February 10, 1951, and were married for 65 years when Budd passed away in July of 2015.
Carrie is survived by her daughters, Jane Lynn Roots and her husband Kelvin, and Susan Mary “Suzy” Werneke Anderson and her husband Rob, all of Terre Haute. She is also survived by grandchildren, R.J. and wife, Gennifer Werneke Garvin and her husband Matthew of Stuart, Florida, Christine Elizabeth Jaklitsch and her husband Fritz of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Karl Andrew Roots of Terre Haute, and Christopher Thomas Werneke Anderson of Los Angeles, California. Carrie’s legacy includes 7 great grandchildren. Other survivors are her sisters, Vera Murle and Brenda Finkbiner and her husband David, and many nieces and nephews including W.C. Miller and his wife Mary of Young Harris, Georgia, Robin Fogle Linkous and her husband William Linkous, esq. of Atlanta, Georgia, Brad Fogle and his wife Denise of Stockbridge, Georgia, Randi Fogle and her husband Jeff Poe of Paso Robles, California, Mary Ann Murle, Ashleigh Nicole Smith and her husband Ryan of Terre Haute, and Robin Werneke of Rockledge, Florida. Carrie was proceeded in death by her husband, Hubert English “Budd” Werneke, her sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Bill Miller, her brother and sister-in-law, Empson and Nancy Fogle, a brother-in-law, Bobb Murle, a nephew, Matthew Murle and a niece, Pamela Miller Kleptz.
Carrie was active in state and local organizations, supported many charities, and chaired fund-raising events for various organizations. Her memberships included First Congregational Church, Mayflower Guild, League of Terre Haute, Country Club of Terre Haute, Indiana Women’s Golf Association, O.L.G.A., Swope Alliance, Elks Club, German Oberlander Club, and Sycamore Club. She was also chosen “Molly Pitcher” at the Cannoneers Ball.
As an active member of First Congregational Church and the Mayflower Guild, Carrie was instrumental in establishing the downtown Strawberry Festival as a fundraiser for the church, and she co-chaired the event for the first 8 years. The festival required several months of preparation each year, and flourishes today, with the Terre Haute Community joining in to volunteer.
Carrie and Budd were avid golfers. Budd taught Carrie to play at age 15, and she went on to win 9 Terre Haute Women’s City Golf Championships over 5 decades, and appeared in 27 final rounds, with 18 runners up. Carrie was runner-up in the Indiana Women’s Golf Association State Tournament, and won the Indiana Senior Women’s State Golf Championship. She also won two Championships in OLGA, and numerous Country Club of Terre Haute ladies golf club tournaments. Carrie chaired many golf tournaments, and served as President of the Indiana Women’s Golf Association and the state golf tournament.
In her later years, Carrie enjoyed her weekly “Lunch Bunch” of life long friends who met every Friday for many years.
Carrie will be deeply missed by her family and friends, and will be remembered for her devotion, strength, perseverance, wit, ambition, work ethic, community service, out-going personality and generosity. She worked very hard to make a beautiful home and holidays for her family and friends.
Visitation will be in the parlor of First Congregational Church, 630 Ohio Street, Terre Haute, IN, 47807, on Saturday, December 2, 2023, from 11:00 a.m.to 1:00 p.m., with memorial service and Celebration of Life immediately following at 1:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Pastor Jim Elliott will be officiating. Entombment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street.
