TERRE HAUTE - Carol Ann (Askue) Ennis, 92, passed away at Westminster Village on December 6th, 2023. One of her journals read: "Faith is the cornerstone on which all great lives are built." Her love was freely given and open.
Carol was born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 21st, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Richard and Mary (Black) Askue, both descendants of early settlers of that region. After Shaw High School, she attended and graduated from Ohio University in 1953 with a degree in Romance Languages. She later obtained a master's degree from Indiana State University in Academic Counseling and completed the coursework for her PhD.
Carol's career began with the War Department in Washington, D.C. in the 1950's. Later, she worked retail and restarted her professional work after raising her sons. She did academic counseling for foreign students at Ivy Tech, Indiana State University, and the University of California at Irvine. She thoroughly enjoyed her last job as an assistant to the Editor of the Orange County Register newspaper, where she frequently interacted with prominent politicians and entertainers of that time. Colleagues appreciated her kindness, problem-solving and grace under fire.
Carol was active throughout her life in the Presbyterian Church and a variety of community and civic organizations including the WILL Center where she served on their board until she was nearly 90 years old. She loved to chat, read, garden, travel and spend time with her family and friends. She was first and foremost a kind, loving and classy woman, but could call upon a steely resolve when warranted.
Carol leaves behind her sister Janet (Vic) Glascock; three sons, Seamus (Tia) Ennis, Huntsville, AL; Chuck Ennis, Indianapolis; Tom (Lessa) Ennis, Austin, TX; seven grandchildren, Khati (Chip) Paul, Huntsville, AL; Stephanie Sterling, Huntsville, AL; Jessica (Sean) Ennis, Bastrop, TX; Erica (Nathan) Owen, Austin, TX; Nathan (Haley) Ennis, Indianapolis, IN; Kayla (Jacob) Candler, Evansville, IN; Julia (Ryan) Taylor, Owenboro, KY; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Sunday, January 7, 2024 in Central Presbyterian Church. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the WILL Center, 1 Dreiser Square, Terre Haute, IN 47807.
