Candace Marie Johnson Shagley, 74, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away Friday, June 19th, 2020 at the Shagley residence. She passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home and surrounded by her loving family. Candace was the cornerstone of her family, the oldest of four siblings and a mother of three.
Candace was born March 30, 1946, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Frank L. Johnson and Lucille Backer Johnson. Survivors include her devoted husband of 51 years, Richard J. Shagley; beloved children, daughter, Elizabeth L. Shagley of Terre Haute; son, Richard J. Shagley II (Alice) of Terre Haute and daughter, Emily A. Shagley of Venice, California; brothers, Mike Johnson (Pat) of Bradenton, FL and Frank "Lindy" Johnson (Teresa) of Tempe, AZ; sister, Sue Kelly (Larry) and sister-in-law, Debbie Johnson, both of Terre Haute, IN; and sisters-in-law, Ann Shagley Sharp (Elliot) of Indianapolis, IN, Beth Wolf (Gary) of Healdsburg, CA, Sally Lacey (Howard) of Avon, IN and Carren Shagley of San Francisco, CA. Also, surviving are eight beautiful grandchildren, George, Eleanor, William, Harriet, Kathleen, Seth, Audrey and Conner; and 19 admiring nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved immensely. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Drake Johnson; brother-in-law, Earl Shagley; and grandchild, Henry Monroe Shagley.
Candy first attended St. Patrick School where she met her husband, and love of her life, Rick, in the first grade. She graduated from Schulte in 1964 and attended Indiana University. She then left to follow her entrepreneurial drive and opened her own successful business, The Rocking Chair, in downtown Terre Haute. First of its kind, Candy set a trend with this upscale boutique by offering elegant women's clothing and accessories. She was a tremendously gifted artist who worked with pottery, paint and mixed media; oftentimes generously giving her beautiful work to family and friends. Candy was known for her artistic spirit and carried it throughout her entire life. She was fortunate to travel the world with Rick, visiting countless museums and sharing her passion through an incredible collection of posters highlighting unique exhibits. This tremendous talent could be seen in her other hobbies, both as a home decorator and gardener. In addition, Candy was also an avid reader and enjoyed watching old films.
She had a keen sense for providing joy for those in her life, particularly to her family, whom she adored with immense and unconditional love. Candy was also admired and loved by a devoted group of friends, many of those relationships having been created through St. Patricks. She was the most generous host, every weekend spent poolside with family and friends, making sure everyone was fed with the most delicious snacks and meals. Whether a stranger or friend, all were made to feel welcome at Shagley home. Candy also created a welcoming home in Bradenton, FL, spending winters just a few doors down from her brother Mike, where she loved to entertain for the holidays. If you were lucky enough to be there, you understand the specialness that was Candy. Her attentive and affectionate mindfulness to make you feel significant and loved was unlike any other. All our lives are better for being wrapped in her warm embrace, and experiencing her truly infinite love.
