Barbara Joan Youngen

Barbara Joan Youngen, 87, Terre Haute, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2022 at home with her family.

Joan was born on February 22, 1934 in Marshall, IL to Kenneth E. and Edna Louise (Crumrin) Shaffer.  They later moved to Terre Haute where she graduated in Gerstmeyer High School’s class of 1952. She was the oldest of three children. Her sister Carolyn Andrews lives in Terre Haute.

On April 21, 1955  she married Calvin Keith Youngen and they had four children.  Her brother, Gary Shaffer, grandson, Mathew Youngen and son-in-law, Joseph Martin preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband Keith, and children Gregory Keith (Valerie), Kimberly Diane, Timothy Dean (Teresa), and Paula Jane (Samuel Winch), six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Joan, Keith and family lived in several locations in the two-state area, including Elnora IN, Hutsonville IL, Country Club Hills IL, Martinsville IN, Rockville IN and two years in American Samoa, before returning to Terre Haute after their retirement.

Joan was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and was active in the United  Methodist Women, Tri Kappa, PEO, Christian Women after Five and was an active bridge player up to the time of her death.

She will be forever remembered for her kindness, humor, generosity, and hospitality.

The family would also like to send our deepest thanks to VNA of the Wabash Valley hospice care and to especially Angie, her nurse, for the amazing care Joan received.
