Archie Goodwin

July 23, 1924 — September 25, 2020

Archie Goodwin, 96, of Terre Haute entered Heaven Friday, September 25, 2020 in Harrison’s Crossing Health Campus with family at his bedside.  He was born July 23, 1924 in Terre Haute to Andrew Goodwin and Anna Struble Goodwin.

Survivors include his sister, Anna Cole of Turlock, CA; his children, Connie Kuykendall (John) of West Terre Haute, and Luana Lane (Steve) of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Brian Goodwin (Teri) of Ft. Collins, CO; his grandchildren, Gretchen Engel (Jeff) of Show Low, AZ, Heidi Charters (Troy) of West Terre Haute, Stephen Goodwin (Jacqueline) of Erie, CO, and Elizabeth Pont (Landon) of Windsor, CO; his great grandchildren, Elaina and Kuy Charters, Zane and Zoe Engel, Leah and Elise Pont, and Emma and Jack Goodwin; as well as many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Andrew, Duncan, and Robert; and his wife, Doris.

Archie joined the Army Air Corps after graduating from Gerstmeyer High School and his first mission was on D-Day. He said “I thank God for letting me serve my country.” He flew 26 missions as a B17 ball turret gunner and never received any serious injuries during the war.  He married his high school sweetheart Doris Bailey Goodwin and they had three children. He was a postal carrier for many years and was bitten by dogs at least 25 times. He and Doris were volunteers at Union Hospital and they were members of Barbour Avenue United Methodist Church. Many thanks go to Dr. V. Reddy, Dr. N. Mercho, Dr. G. Rusk, and the staff at Harrison’s Crossing who shared tender care for dad.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 30, 2020 in Roselawn Memorial Park with Pastor Bob Roush officiating and military services by V.F.W. Post #972.  Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25 th Street.  There will be no visitation.  Funeral information may also be found at www.callahanandhughes.com .
